API 570 Piping Fundamentals

Course Content

Corrosion Under Insulation
Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) is a form of external corrosion that occurs beneath insulation systems on piping or equipment. It is considered one of the most dangerous corrosion mechanisms because it is hidden from view and often progresses unnoticed until failure occurs.CUI develops when moisture (rainwater, condensation, wash water, or process leaks) penetrates damaged or poorly sealed insulation and becomes trapped against the metal surface.

Deadlegs
A deadleg is a section of piping that has little or no flow during normal operation. Because fluids remain stagnant, deadlegs are highly susceptible to accelerated corrosion, making them a critical concern in piping integrity management.

Injection Points
An injection point is a location in a piping system where chemicals, inhibitors, water, steam, or other substances are introduced into the process stream. These areas are considered high-risk locations due to potential localized corrosion, erosion, or cracking caused by improper mixing or aggressive injected fluids.

Inspecting for Deterioration
Inspecting for Deterioration refers to the systematic inspection of piping systems to identify damage, degradation, or loss of integrity that may affect safe operation. API 570 emphasizes early detection of deterioration to prevent leaks, failures, and safety incidents.

Inspection Procedure
An inspection procedure is a structured process used to evaluate the condition, integrity, and fitness-for-service of piping systems in order to ensure safe and reliable operation.

Piping Component
Piping components are individual items that make up a piping system and are essential for controlling flow, pressure, and direction of process fluids. In API 570, piping components require inspection to ensure they remain safe, reliable, and fit for continued service.

Soil to Air Interface
The Soil-to-Air Interface (SAI) is the transition zone where a buried pipe emerges from the soil and becomes exposed to the atmosphere. This area is considered highly susceptible to accelerated corrosion due to changing environmental conditions.
